Out Of The Pond with George Perry @ Identity

In the last year, we noticed a recurring pattern: we were investing substantial time responding to procurement-led briefs where we had no established rapport with the client.

These reactive opportunities often lacked transparency and limited our ability to influence outcomes creatively or strategically. It became clear we were spreading ourselves too thin and compromising the quality of our work.

This realisation prompted us to re-evaluate our approach and define clearer criteria for what constituted the right opportunity.

We decided to be more deliberate about where we focused our energy. We built a more structured pipeline strategy that combined proactive outreach, thought leadership, and deeper research into target sectors.

By concentrating on fewer, higher-value prospects, we shifted from being reactive to being purpose-led. We also encouraged our teams to engage earlier in the buying cycle, creating opportunities to shape briefs and demonstrate our value as strategic partners.

This opened doors in new markets and helped us reposition from a supplier to a trusted advisor.

The biggest challenge was cultural. Business development teams are naturally driven to chase every lead, and saying no can feel counterintuitive, especially when targets are in play.

We had to build confidence in our new process and accept that success would take time. There was also the practical challenge of retraining ourselves to think differently about qualification.

We needed to replace the sense of urgency with discipline and patience, trusting that a more selective approach would create stronger, more sustainable growth.

This shift has already paid off. By focusing on the right opportunities, we have improved conversion rates and built richer relationships with clients who value collaboration and creativity.

We have won work in sectors we had previously struggled to access and have strengthened our brand as a specialist in strategic experiential activations.

The team feels more motivated and connected to the work because every project aligns with our purpose and plays to our strengths.

Be prepared to back your conviction. It takes courage to move away from the comfort of volume and to redefine what good opportunities look like. Start by setting clear qualification criteria and stick to them, even when it feels uncomfortable. Focus on building credibility and relationships ahead of the brief.

Above all, remember that quality and consistency will always outperform quantity in the long run.
