Uncertainty has reigned supreme and new business has been way harder to find.
Even at the best of times, there are so many things that BD people must do constantly; be active, attend events, enter awards, communicate on social media, show empathy, show authenticity…show up!…research, plan, pitch, build relationships, gather intel, etc. etc. etc., but being VISIBLE is crucial and when your clients are unsure, your agency colleagues get nervy, and you – the BD – can get very, very twitchy making it even more difficult to be your chirpy, VISIBLEself!
Whilst I love small groups, have no problem speaking to strangers and make a living out of connecting the dots between people based on gutfeel and instinct, I do suffer from anxiety on stage – I also feel a good amount of Imposter Syndrome generally.
But personal brand and VISIBILITYare key ingredients to overall business development success, and I reached a point in April 2024 and another in October 2024 when I had to dig deep and try some new methods to raise my profile and with it, my game!
I’d say that generally 2024 has been a year in which some anxiety has been positively reframed. I put myself out there more and reframed Imposter Syndrome as FANTASY FEAR with the help of leadership coaching. I got up on stage at industry events, I filled the room on the opening day of MAD//Fest London, I recorded a podcast about BD and I’m supporting the community by writing this – rather than worry about it being lacking in value, I’m thinking it will help.
Looking ahead, I’ve been booked to appear at MAD//UpNorth in Feb 2025 and then I’ll hit the stage big time next May to shine a light on industry talent for The BD100 which I’m so proud to have co-founded. My leadership coach encouraged me to get VISIBLE…I answered!
Generally, I have a new approach to personal profile and VISIBILITY. Overcoming some of that FEAR has EXTENDED my network, brought INNOVATION from those who joined me in conversation on stage and together we have HELPED others. I picked up new clients after both live events and I added to my network of brand contacts and agency leaders BECAUSE I was more VISIBLE.
